The Glaciers of Abkhazia
The glaciers of Abkhazia have a significant impact on the environment, in particular, they make a significant contribution to the formation of the water regime of rivers, regional climatic conditions, the degradation of unique landscapes and the issue of sea level rise on the Black Sea coast. The study of the current state of glaciers in the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia is possible only through remote sensing, on the one hand, due to the absence of a local glaciological school, and on the other hand, taking into account the current political situation. This determines the special relevance of the research conducted its value and importance.
There are three glacial basins in the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia: the Bzipi River, the Kelasuri River and the Kodori River. According to the catalog, a total of 136 glaciers are registered on the territory of Abkhazia. As of 2020, 121 glaciers remain.
