The Institute of Hydrometeorology was established in 1953 as the legal successor of Tbilisi Magnetic-Meteorological (Geophysical) Observatory (1844).
Based on the Resolution # 293 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Georgia of March 10, 1992 the Institute was under the system of Georgian National Academy of Sciences during 1992 - 2005.
According to the Resolution N # 58 of the Government of Georgia of March 16, 2006, “On the Establishment of State Scientific-Research Institutions as Legal Entity of Public Law”, the Institute was established as LEPL.
By the Resolution # 210 of the Government of Georgia of July 27, 2010, the Institute of Hydrometeorology was reorganized into the structural unit of the LEPL Georgian Technical University as independent scientific-research unit.
The Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of meteorology (atmospheric physics), agrometeorology, hydrology (hydrosphere physics), climate and its change, environmental pollution, renewable energy sources and resources, study of dangerous and catastrophic hydrometeorological events and elaborate mitigation/prevention measures.
