Electronic Atlas
Glaciers of Georgia
Discription
According to the glacier catalogue, western Georgia contained 409 glaciers with a combined area of 465.7kmІ [26]. Distribution and other details are provided in Appendix 1. By 2010, the total glaciered area had decreased to 384.4kmІ, and by 2015 and 2020 to 318.7kmІ and 274.9kmІ, respectively. This corresponds to a cumulative area loss of 190.8kmІ (41.0%) relative to the catalogue baseline. The reduction occurred in distinct phases: a loss of 81.3kmІ (17.5%) during the initial six decades, followed by an additional 47.5kmІ (13.7%) over the subsequent five-year period.
Glacier area and number change
Glacier number exhibited marked temporal variability. While the catalogue recorded 409 glaciers, the number increased to 510 in 2010 (a 19% rise), mainly as a consequence of large and medium glacier fragmentation into smaller units. After 2010, glacier numbers declined, reaching 432 by 2015 and 375 by 2020, reflecting a net decrease of 34 glaciers (8.3%) compared with the catalogue inventory (see third row of table 2 for the western Georgia).
These quantitative indicators demonstrate pronounced glacier retreat and fragmentation in Western Georgia. However, the overall rate of glacier degradation remains lower than that observed in Eastern Georgia, suggesting regional variability in response to climate forcing and local topoclimatic conditions.
